Punjab Police arrested four operatives of the Kishan gang in connection with the murder of Shiromani Akali Dal councillor Harjinder Singh in Amritsar, officials said on Monday. The swift action came within eight hours of the incident, underscoring the police’s commitment to cracking down on organized crime.
Harjinder Singh, an Akali Dal councillor from Ward No. 2 under the Jandiala Assembly constituency, was fatally shot on Sunday while riding a bike. Police sources revealed that three to four assailants intercepted him before opening fire, leading to his death at a nearby hospital.
The arrested suspects include Jobanjit Singh alias Joban (22) of Nangal Guru, Amit (19) of Ghode Shah, Gurpreet Singh alias Don (18) of Nawankot, and Gurpreet Singh alias Gopi (22) from Mohalla Shekhupura. During a police chase, Gurpreet Gopi fired at officers and was injured in retaliatory fire, now undergoing treatment at Civil Hospital, Amritsar.
Police recovered a 9MM Glock pistol, a scooter, and a motorcycle used in the crime. Authorities are continuing investigations to uncover additional gang members and connections.
Amritsar Police Commissioner Gurpreet Singh Bhullar said the arrests were made based on intelligence and technical leads. DGP Gaurav Yadav described the operation as a key step in the fight against inter-gang violence.
However, Shiromani Akali Dal leader Bikram Singh Majithia criticized the police response, alleging collusion between the murderers and local authorities linked to drug trafficking. Majithia condemned the police for not acting despite repeated attacks on Harjinder Singh, accusing them of inaction due to political pressure.
