HARRIS COUNTY, Texas — Four people are accused of carrying out an elaborate rental fraud scheme that targeted more than a dozen properties in Harris County, using a stolen identity.
The scheme involved two suspects, Benjamin and Nazly Greene, who gained national attention in 2022 due to a viral road rage shooting incident. The couple, alongside Harold Doyle and Teresa Zuluaga, have now been charged with engaging in organized criminal activity.
The suspects allegedly used the stolen identity of a local woman to rent properties, including several in the Katy area, for leases totaling more than $330,000. In one instance, the properties were listed on Facebook Marketplace and rented out to unsuspecting tenants.
Doyle, a former realtor whose license was revoked in 2021, was arrested after investigators linked him to fraudulent real estate applications and the possession of a fake ID using the identity theft victim’s information. The group’s operations also involved money laundering, including fraudulent payments made via Zelle and money orders.
Investigators discovered 62 properties under discussion among the accused fraudsters in a WhatsApp group and uncovered extensive records detailing other potential victims. All suspects are currently out on bond.
The fraud was uncovered after a realtor flagged a suspicious lease application, prompting a wider investigation. Experts warn that rental scams are becoming increasingly common in the Houston area, urging potential renters to avoid using unverified platforms like Facebook Marketplace.
