FORT WORTH, Texas — Fort Worth police are investigating after a woman was fatally shot Friday morning at a motel, authorities said.

Officers responded around 5:20 a.m. to a motel in the 1800 block of Jacksboro Highway, where they found the victim with an apparent gunshot wound to her stomach. She was transported to a local hospital but later died from her injuries.

The victim has been identified as 37-year-old Jessica Stephanie Gonzales. Her death has been ruled a homicide by the Tarrant County Medical Examiner’s Office.

Preliminary reports indicate that the shooting occurred while Gonzales and the owner of a stolen vehicle attempted to recover it. Two individuals connected to the stolen vehicle reportedly fled on foot after the incident.

Police also noted that the stolen vehicle may have been involved in a drive-by shooting earlier that morning, although it is not confirmed if it was the same vehicle. Authorities say the incident appears to be isolated with no ongoing threat to the public.

The investigation is ongoing.
