Fort Bend County Judge KP George, who was re-elected in 2022, was arrested on Friday and charged with two counts of money laundering, according to county jail records and the district attorney’s office. This arrest comes amid ongoing legal issues, including a prior misdemeanor charge for misrepresentation of identity.
George is accused of laundering between $30,000 and $150,000, with the charges linked to alleged wire fraud and tampering with campaign finance reports. The money laundering charges are unrelated to the previous misdemeanor charge, which stems from accusations that George collaborated with former staffer Taral Patel to fabricate racist attacks on his campaign’s social media accounts.
The Fort Bend County District Attorney’s Office issued a statement confirming the charges, emphasizing the ongoing nature of the investigation. According to court records, the investigation resulted in two felony indictments, and George could face up to 10 years in prison if convicted.
George’s arrest traces back to his 2022 re-election campaign when he shared screenshots of racist comments made against him. Prosecutors claim that some of these comments were fabricated by Patel using fake accounts. Patel, who ran for County Commissioner in 2024, is currently facing nine criminal charges for similar actions, including impersonating real people to spread xenophobic comments.
Following his arrest, George was booked into the county jail and is being held on a $20,000 bail. His office announced that the State of the County address scheduled for May 8 has been postponed until further notice.
