ALBANY, KY — A former Bluegrass Stockyards manager and his accomplice face criminal charges for allegedly embezzling over $500,000 from the company. Bret Carver, 48, and Brittany Parmley Gerkey, 38, were arrested on March 12, 2025, for theft and unlawful access to a computer, according to the Clinton County Sheriff’s Office.
Carver, a former Albany Bluegrass Stockyard manager, and Gerkey are accused of stealing $554,780 from the business between February 2022 and May 2024. The theft occurred through a fraudulent scheme involving fake cattle sales.
The Bluegrass Stockyards filed a lawsuit against Carver, Gerkey, her husband Josh Gerkey, and C&C Farm, an unincorporated Kentucky association owned by Carver. The lawsuit claims Carver entered fake cattle sales into the system under existing clients’ names, generating checks made out to non-existent sellers. These checks were allegedly forged by Carver, who then deposited them into his personal account. Gerkey is said to have helped by transferring money back into the company’s account, while also issuing duplicate checks during legitimate cattle auctions.
From February to April 2024, Brittany Gerkey is accused of issuing checks to her husband, totaling $60,771, for cattle sales that didn’t exist.
The alleged scheme came to light in April 2024 when a transfer of funds from Bluegrass Stockyards of Stanford’s custodial account was discovered, causing a balance overdraw. Carver and Gerkey were both fired from Bluegrass Stockyards, with Carver’s termination occurring in July 2023 and Gerkey’s in May 2024.
Carver and Gerkey are scheduled for arraignment on April 10, 2025, in Clinton County for their criminal charges.
