Nairobi, Kenya — Police at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) have arrested Fobonou Wassou De-dieu, also known as Joseph Kabongo, a Cameroonian facing fraud charges, for attempting to leave the country without court approval.
Fobonou was charged last year with defrauding Hayet Amri of Ksh 3.5 million in a fake gold deal. Authorities apprehended him as he tried to board a Philippine-bound flight, despite bond conditions requiring him to surrender his passport to the court and obtain permission before traveling abroad.
Although Fobonou submitted his expired passport (which expired in March), investigators found he secretly acquired a new passport while leaving the expired one with the court. On August 20, 2025, detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) intercepted him at JKIA.
Fobonou was arraigned before the Milimani Law Courts. In his defense, he claimed he was unaware of the requirement to seek court permission and cited the urgency of seeking medical care abroad.
Magistrate Dolphina Alego granted the prosecution’s request to cancel his bond and ordered Fobonou to remain in custody pending the hearing of his fraud case.
