Florida Man Arrested for Human Trafficking and Victim Rescue

Rico Gardner arrested for trafficking, leading to victim’s rescue

by Sophia Bennett

A Florida man, Rico Gardner, 45, has been arrested in connection with human trafficking following an undercover operation, which also led to the rescue of a victim. The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office (HCSO) announced Gardner’s arrest on March 12, 2024, after a months-long investigation into his trafficking activities.

Gardner was initially arrested on November 4, 2024, during an undercover operation aimed at addressing prostitution. However, further investigation revealed disturbing details that led to more serious charges, including coercing a person into commercial sex acts and forcing another person into prostitution.

The investigation uncovered that Gardner trafficked a victim from April 10, 2024, to November 2024. He reportedly used physical violence to control the victim, deprived her of food and sleep, and forced her to engage in commercial sex acts for his financial gain. Gardner facilitated these acts by placing escort advertisements, communicating with sex buyers, and transporting the victim to appointments where he waited nearby.

Sheriff Chad Chronister praised the victim for her bravery in coming forward, noting that her courage not only freed her from her trafficker but also serves as inspiration for others suffering in silence. The Selah Freedom organization, a non-profit group focused on combating human trafficking, is assisting in the victim’s recovery.

Authorities continue to urge anyone with information on human trafficking or in need of assistance to contact the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office at (813) 247-8200.
