FLORENCE, S.C. — David Antwan Johnson, a 45-year-old man from Florence, has been sentenced to five years in federal prison for possessing a firearm in furtherance of drug trafficking.

According to evidence presented in court, the incident took place on December 22, 2022, when a Florence County Sheriff’s deputy attempted to conduct a traffic stop on a vehicle. Johnson initially refused to stop, but eventually pulled over and fled on foot.

As officers pursued him, Johnson was seen running towards law enforcement with his hand in his pocket. When he was detained, a loaded firearm fell from his pocket. Johnson later admitted to possessing the gun.

The federal sentence stems from his involvement in drug trafficking, with the firearm serving as a tool to facilitate his illegal activities. The court ruled that Johnson’s actions posed a significant threat to public safety, leading to the five-year sentence.

This conviction highlights the ongoing efforts of law enforcement to tackle drug-related crimes and illegal firearms possession in the Florence area.
