GILROY, Calif. — Five suspected gang members were arrested after allegedly assaulting and robbing three men in downtown Gilroy early this week, according to the Gilroy Police Department.
The attack took place around midnight on Monday near the intersection of Monterey and Sixth streets. Police responded to a report of a fight in the area and found the three victims with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.
According to police, the suspects repeatedly hit and kicked the victims before stealing their jewelry and cash. Officers were able to apprehend the suspects as they tried to leave the downtown area, with the stolen property found in their possession. The property was returned to the victims.
The suspects, all from Gilroy, were identified as Mathew Garcia Flores, 19, Michael Thomas Haro, 29, Josiah Xavier Lujan, 19, Adrian Anthony Navarrette, 20, and Jose Angel Santos III, 19. Police believe the group is affiliated with a local criminal street gang.
The suspects are currently being held at the Santa Clara County Jail, facing charges related to the assault and robbery.
