Police in Koraput district arrested five individuals, including three minors, for their involvement in the murder of 26-year-old Jagannath Majhi in Nakulguda village under B. Singhpur police limits.
The adult accused have been identified as Bhakta Adhari — the nephew of the deceased — and Nilakant Majhi, both residents of Nakulguda. The murder weapon was a wooden stick allegedly used during a drunken altercation.
At a press briefing, Borigumma SDPO Tapaswini Kanhar stated that the incident occurred on January 1, following tensions during a volleyball match. Jagannath, who was intoxicated, had reportedly threatened the group and cut down the volleyball net earlier that day.
Later that evening, the accused — also under the influence — were planning a small party when Jagannath returned, again intoxicated, holding a stick. A violent confrontation ensued between him and the group, including his nephew. During the fight, Jagannath was fatally attacked with a wooden stick, leading to his death.
“This was a result of escalating tensions and alcohol-fueled aggression,” said SDPO Kanhar. “Two of the adult accused will be presented in court today, while the three minors are being sent to a juvenile facility in Berhampur.”
The case is being treated as homicide, and further investigation is underway to determine the sequence of events and any additional involvement.
