MIAMI — A Miami firefighter-paramedic has been arrested after allegedly following a woman during her morning walk and exposing himself, according to law enforcement sources and CBS News Miami.

Demetrious Reshad Sams, 34, was taken into custody early Tuesday at his apartment in Homestead following an incident on Saturday, June 7, near S.W. 86th Street and 58th Avenue in South Miami. Police say Sams followed the woman in his black 2021 Dodge Charger, exposed himself, and touched himself in her presence.

A witness helped police identify Sams by providing his vehicle’s license plate number, and the victim later identified him in a photo lineup.

The victim expressed disappointment and fear after the incident, emphasizing the betrayal of trust given Sams’ role as a first responder. “He should be a trusted, respected member of our community like all other firefighters are,” she told CBS News Miami. She also encouraged other women who experienced similar encounters to report them.

South Miami Police Sgt. Fernando Bosch revealed that Coral Gables police are investigating four to five similar cases involving Sams, who is believed to have committed these acts across multiple municipalities. “We believe this has been going on for a pretty long while,” Bosch said, urging victims to come forward as such behavior can escalate.

Miami Fire-Rescue confirmed Sams, a four-year department veteran, has been arrested. The department plans to conduct a thorough internal investigation in line with its policies. A spokesperson stressed that misconduct, whether on or off duty, is unacceptable and that the department holds its personnel to the highest standards.

Sams remains in custody. His attorney noted that while a family member inquired about legal representation, no formal engagement has been made.
