BATU PAHAT — A 53-year-old father of two has been sentenced to 22 months in jail for stealing a water pump and assaulting his former housemate when confronted. Khairruddin Gimon pleaded guilty to both charges before Magistrate Arun Noval Dass in the Magistrate’s Court on February 21, 2025.
Khairruddin was convicted under Section 323 of the Penal Code for voluntarily causing hurt to his former housemate, a 39-year-old man, in Taman Kota, Yong Peng, at 6:30 PM on February 16. When the victim noticed his water pump was missing, he confronted Khairruddin, who initially denied taking it. However, after further questioning, Khairruddin admitted to the theft but responded by punching the victim in the face.
The stolen water pump was later recovered at a hut in an oil palm plantation in Yong Peng on February 17. For the second charge of dishonestly retaining stolen property, Khairruddin was sentenced to 15 months’ imprisonment.
Magistrate Arun Noval Dass ordered that both sentences run concurrently, resulting in a total of 22 months behind bars. Khairruddin was represented by Siti Farha Garieb from the National Legal Aid Foundation, while Deputy Public Prosecutor Farah Wahidah Mohd Sharip handled the case for the prosecution.
