A former serviceman, A Baskar (60), and his wife, B Anusya (58), were arrested in Cuddalore for allegedly duping two men of Rs17.5 lakh by promising government jobs.
The complaint was filed by D Devendiran (50) from S Puthur village, after his son’s classmate’s father, B Gokul, introduced Baskar as a senior Railway official who could secure a job for Devendiran’s son, D Ajith Kumar, in the Tamil Nadu Rural Development Department.
Initially skeptical, Devendiran later paid ₹6 lakh in two instalments following assurances from Baskar and Anusya, who claimed strong political and Railway connections. Despite promises of a job within a month or a refund, only Rs1 lakh was returned.
Further investigations revealed another victim, Gunasekaran, had lost Rs14 lakh to Baskar under similar pretenses and received just Rs1.5 lakh back. Both victims faced threats from Baskar, who boasted about his influence in the Railways and political circles.
Police confirmed that Baskar was an ex-serviceman with only temporary Railway employment.
Following a probe ordered by Cuddalore Superintendent of Police S Jeyakumar, the couple was arrested from their home in Thirupathiripuliyur and remanded to judicial custody.
