A former Miami-Dade Schools police officer, Yessenia Sanchez, has been sentenced to 30 years in prison and 20 years of probation for the attempted murder of her ex-boyfriend, Officer Damian Colon, outside his family’s home in Hialeah.
Sanchez, who pleaded guilty to charges of first-degree attempted murder with a deadly weapon and stalking, shot Colon on November 5, 2022.
Victim’s Family Speaks Out
During the sentencing, Colon’s brother, David Colon, delivered an emotional statement condemning Sanchez.
“May you suffer the same every day of your life. We despise you,” he said. “You are a horrible human being. You have destroyed a family.”
Damian Colon, a 17-year veteran of the Miami-Dade Police Department, survived the attack but underwent extensive surgery.
Details of the Shooting
Investigators revealed that Sanchez used a tracking app to locate Colon at his family’s home near West 79th Street and 13th Avenue. She confronted him in the driveway and opened fire before fleeing the scene. Surveillance footage later captured her vehicle crashing into another car as she sped away.
State Attorney’s Statement
Miami-Dade State Attorney Katherine Fernandez Rundle highlighted the severity of the case, stating:
“No one is immune to the terror of domestic violence. Sanchez’ 30-year sentence cannot undo the physical and emotional scars she inflicted.”
Colon’s Road to Recovery
Despite his injuries, Colon credits his family and fellow officers for supporting him through the difficult recovery.
“I feel blessed. Thank God for my family and everyone who stood by me,” he said.
Earlier this month, Colon retired from the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office, a career he had hoped to continue.
