SOUTHAVEN, Miss. (WMC) – A former Southaven police officer, Tony Herring Jr., has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for his involvement in a car theft ring operating across North Mississippi.

Herring pleaded guilty to one count of accessory after the fact to commit auto theft, admitting to aiding and protecting individuals involved in the organized theft of vehicles.

He was indicted in April 2024 following a lengthy investigation into an auto theft operation active during 2023. Prosecutors revealed that Herring used his authority as a police officer to assist others in stealing vehicles and to shield them from law enforcement detection.

Once the misconduct was uncovered, Herring was immediately terminated from the Southaven Police Department.

Authorities say the case highlights the dangers of abuse of power within law enforcement and reaffirm their commitment to accountability, regardless of rank or position.
