PEARL, Miss. (WLBT/Gray News) — A former Pearl Police Department officer has been sentenced to 20 years in prison for stealing from a deceased couple.
Christopher Taylor Lofton, 30, pleaded guilty to grand larceny in Rankin County Circuit Court.
Authorities said that in November 2024, Lofton responded to a call after an elderly woman had died at her home. Officers and paramedics attempted to revive her, but she was pronounced dead of natural causes.
Investigators reported that after the scene was cleared, the woman’s husband discovered $32,000 missing from a dresser drawer. Lofton was later found to have stolen the money.
As part of his sentence, Lofton must repay the $32,000 and surrender his law enforcement certification.
The Pearl Police Department stated, “His actions betrayed the public’s trust and tarnished the badge. From the start, he was removed from duty, and the case was turned over to investigators with the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation. Justice has now spoken.”
