DURHAM REGION, ONTARIO — A former nurse has been arrested in connection with a series of thefts and break-ins at long-term care facilities in Oshawa and Bowmanville, according to Durham Regional Police.
Investigators began looking into reports last week that a woman was entering long-term care homes and stealing personal belongings from residents’ rooms. The suspect allegedly used her knowledge of these facilities to gain entry unnoticed.
On Friday, police arrested Kayla Summers, 35, of Clarington, at her residence. She now faces multiple charges, including:
Break and enter with intent (dwelling house)
Theft not exceeding $5,000
Fraud under $5,000
Police released a photo and description of the suspect in hopes of identifying further victims. Summers is described as a white female with a medium build and red hair, wearing a pink and purple scrub top with dark-colored pants at the time of the offenses.
Authorities believe more victims may be out there and are urging anyone with information to contact Detective Constable Mayhew at the East Criminal Investigations Branch at 1-888-579-1520 ext. 3833.
Durham police emphasize their commitment to protecting vulnerable residents in long-term care and are working to ensure all affected families receive justice.
