Ex-AFL Player Ryan Crowley Charged With Assault

Alleged attack on ex-partner Lauren Dunn in Claremont

by Amelia Crawford

Former AFL player Ryan Crowley has been charged with nine offences, including aggravated assault and deprivation of liberty, following an alleged domestic violence incident involving his ex-girlfriend, former Married at First Sight contestant Lauren Dunn.

Police were called to a property in Claremont, Western Australia, around 10:15 a.m. on Wednesday. Crowley, 41, was arrested at the scene and appeared in Perth Magistrates Court the next day.

Prosecutors allege that Crowley caused injuries to Dunn’s wrist, chest, and fingers—where some nails were reportedly torn off. Photos of the injuries were submitted to the court as evidence.

The former Fremantle Dockers midfielder is also accused of making threats and impeding Dunn’s breathing. The court was told of previous family violence incident reports involving the couple, although no prior charges were filed. Crowley’s lawyer described their relationship as “turbulent” and denied any physical abuse took place.

Despite opposition from police prosecutors who called the charges “horrendous,” Crowley was granted bail on a $20,000 surety. He must report to Northbridge Police Station twice a week and is barred from contacting Dunn.

The couple was publicly known to have separated in 2023 after a five-year relationship.

Crowley played for the Dockers from 2003 to 2015 and was known for his tagging role. His career faced controversy in 2015 when he tested positive for a banned substance, resulting in a 12-month suspension. He briefly returned to play for Essendon before retiring.

Crowley is expected to return to court in July.
