Ethan Guo, a 19-year-old American teenager attempting to fly solo to all seven continents for charity, has been arrested after landing in Antarctica without permission.
Authorities in Chile claim Guo violated several national and international rules by altering his flight plan without notifying officials and landing in a region of Antarctica under Chilean territorial claim.
Guo’s mission aims to raise $1 million for cancer research. On his website, he explains his motivation: “In 2021 my cousin was diagnosed with cancer. I admire him. He inspired me to take life more seriously and join the fight against cancer.”
He aspires to be the first person in history to complete a solo flight to all seven continents in a small aircraft.
The arrest highlights the strict regulations governing Antarctic flights and territorial claims, underscoring the importance of compliance for pilots operating in this sensitive region.
