The Ernakulam Central Police on Sunday arrested two men, Vipin (52) from Thevara and Mohammed Hashim (48) from Kollam, in connection with a theft that occurred at General Hospital (GH). The theft took place early Friday morning when a purse containing a smartphone worth Rs 35,000, Rs 5,000 in cash, and an Aadhaar card was stolen.
The victim, a resident of Thammanam, had been receiving treatment at the hospital and fell asleep in a room after an injection. It was during this time that the suspects allegedly took the purse.
Following the theft, the police tracked down the accused, who were caught near Marine Drive. They were promptly arrested and presented in court, where they were remanded in judicial custody. The arrest was made under the leadership of Ernakulam Central SHO Aneesh Joy.
Police sources suggest that the accused were part of a network known for purchasing stolen mobile phones, primarily targeting locations like trains, railway stations, and hospitals. These phones are allegedly sold to second-hand sales and spare parts rackets, often involving individuals from northern India. Investigations are ongoing to uncover further links in the racket.
