MADISON, Ind. (WISH) — A South Carolina man has been arrested for allegedly stealing nearly $1 million from his elderly grandmother while serving as her legal guardian in Indiana.
Indiana State Police arrested 54-year-old Eric Dyer of Batesburg, South Carolina, on Thursday at a hotel in Madison. The arrest follows a months-long investigation that began in May 2024 after a financial institution reported suspicious activity involving his grandmother’s accounts.
Investigators discovered that Dyer had been named power of attorney and legal guardian of his grandmother in 2021. Between 2022 and 2024, he allegedly withdrew nearly $1 million from her bank accounts for personal expenses. Meanwhile, records showed he was behind on payments for her care at an assisted living facility in Madison.
The Jefferson County Prosecutor’s Office reviewed the findings and issued a warrant charging Dyer with multiple felonies, including theft, money laundering, corrupt business influence, neglect of a dependent, and a misdemeanor count of elder abuse.
Dyer is currently being held at the Jefferson County Jail and awaits his initial court appearance. Authorities say this case underscores the importance of oversight in elder care and financial guardianship.
