Authorities in Sequoyah County have arrested a woman accused of fatally shooting her husband in a domestic incident reported Thursday night.
Sequoyah County Sheriff’s deputies confirmed that 70-year-old Elizabeth Poteete was taken into custody in connection with the shooting death of her husband, Troy Poteete. The sheriff’s office stated that the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has assumed control of the investigation as inquiries continue.
The Cherokee Nation later identified the victim as a prominent tribal leader, noting that Troy Poteete previously served as Chief Justice of the Cherokee Nation Supreme Court. He also represented his community as a tribal council member for eight years.
In a statement, the Cherokee Nation described his death as a profound loss, citing his long-standing service and leadership within the tribe.
Authorities have not released further details surrounding the circumstances of the shooting as the investigation remains ongoing.
