Eight Charged in Chatham County Fraud Scheme Targeting Elderly Victim

Eight individuals have been charged in connection with a fraud investigation out of Chatham County, where investigators say they stole approximately $40,000 from an elderly victim.

According to WRAL, the fraudulent activities began as early as April 2023. The Chatham County Sheriff’s Office Staff Sergeant over investigations, Rob Miller, explained that his team had to go through multiple search warrants to carefully examine each transaction and piece together the case.

Miller emphasized the importance of monitoring elderly relatives’ financial accounts, especially as they grow older and may struggle to manage their finances. In this case, the victim’s daughter held power of attorney, which allowed her to access necessary records from the financial institution to assist the investigation. Miller added that this case highlights a disturbing trend of elderly exploitation, citing another recent case in Durham where a home health aide pleaded guilty to exploitation and property theft by false pretense.

“Elderly people are often unaware when money goes missing, making them prime targets for fraudsters,” Miller said. “That’s why it’s so important for family members to be vigilant and research who they allow into their homes.”

He also warned about common scams that pressure victims into quick payment, noting that legitimate bill collectors or utility companies won’t demand immediate payment over the phone. He advised people to be cautious when receiving such calls.

The individuals charged in this case include:

Whitney Briana Eddings, 29, of Clinton, charged with 11 counts of obtaining property by false pretense, seven counts of identity theft, and two counts of insurance fraud.

Marc-Anthony Sebastian Allen, 31, of Roseboro, facing 39 counts of obtaining property by false pretense and 40 counts of identity theft.

Timothy Bruce Lee, 58, of Clinton, charged with six counts of obtaining property by false pretense and six counts of identity theft.

Nathan Grey Morrison, 31, of Clinton, facing one count each of obtaining property by false pretense and identity theft.

Charles Scott Wood, 35, of Dunn, charged with one count each of obtaining property by false pretense and identity theft.

Caitlin Frances Kahlor-Harmer, 38, of Benson, facing one count each of obtaining property by false pretense and identity theft.

Wanda French Lee, 50, of Clinton, charged with three counts of obtaining property by false pretense and three counts of identity theft.

Kyle Everette Strickland, 31, of Clinton, facing 33 counts of obtaining property by false pretense and 30 counts of identity theft.

The Chatham County Sheriff’s Office has not yet revealed how the suspects gained access to the victim’s personal information. The next court date for all the suspects is scheduled for May 12th.
