MISSISSAUGA, ONTARIO — Peel police say eight people have been arrested after officers recovered more than 450 pieces of stolen mail valued at over $400,000 in a large-scale theft investigation.
The probe, dubbed “Project Undeliverable,” was launched in April by Peel Regional Police, in partnership with Halton police and Canada Post, following reports of mail thefts across the region.
“The investigation uncovered a group of individuals working together to target residential mailboxes, resulting in widespread theft and disruption to community members,” police said in a Friday news release.
On September 8 and 9, investigators executed search warrants at multiple homes in Mississauga, including properties near Rhinebank Street and Brandon Gate Drive, and Dwiggin Avenue and Kittridge Drive.
Officers seized 465 stolen mail items, including:
255 cheques
182 credit cards
35 government IDs
20 gift cards
The eight suspects have been identified as:
Sumanpreet Singh, Gurdeep Chattha, Jashandeep Jattana, Harman Singh, Jasanpreet Singh, Manroop Singh, Rajbir Singh, and Upinderjit Singh.
Police have laid 344 charges in total, including theft from mail, possession of property obtained by crime, possession of break-in instruments, mischief, and possession of stolen credit cards.
Authorities are working with the Crown Attorney’s Office and the Canada Border Services Agency to determine whether some of the accused, who are foreign nationals, may face deportation as part of the judicial process.
