In a targeted operation to tackle Assam’s growing drug problem, the East Guwahati Police District (EGPD) team from Basistha Police Station rescued four youths found consuming narcotic substances in the Basistha Natun Bazar area on Wednesday.

“Every rescue is an opportunity to help someone start over,” said a senior EGPD officer. Acting on reliable intelligence, the team intervened quickly, preventing further harm and arranging the youths’ immediate transfer to a rehabilitation centre for medical care and psychological counselling.

Officials confirmed that the rescued youths have been admitted to a de-addiction and rehabilitation centre, where they will receive treatment and participate in social reintegration programs. The operation highlights Assam Police’s dual approach of law enforcement and compassion, giving those struggling with addiction a second chance.

In a follow-up action, the team raided the Natun Bazar Shiv Nagar area and arrested a habitual drug peddler, Dipen Barman, also known as Kosu, aged 30. Police recovered 39.55 grams of heroin hidden in five tobacco boxes, along with 30 empty plastic vials believed to have been used for packaging.

Dipen Barman has been taken into custody, and legal proceedings have been initiated under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.

The operation forms part of Assam Police’s ongoing #WarOnDrugs campaign, launched under the guidance of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, emphasizing both strict enforcement and compassionate rehabilitation. The DGP of Assam Police reaffirmed the department’s commitment to breaking the drug supply chain while supporting individuals struggling with addiction.
