Eduardo Bolsonaro Charged with Coercion Amid Coup Case

Brazilian lawmaker faces charges linked to father’s coup conviction

SAO PAULO — Brazil’s Prosecutor General has formally charged federal lawmaker Eduardo Bolsonaro with coercion, according to a statement released Monday. The charge is connected to the broader investigation involving his father, former President Jair Bolsonaro, who was convicted for plotting a coup.

The Prosecutor General’s office accused Eduardo Bolsonaro of repeatedly prioritizing his personal and family interests over those of Brazil and its society. This charge comes amid ongoing political turmoil and legal proceedings linked to the Bolsonaro family.

Earlier this year, Eduardo Bolsonaro relocated to the United States, aiming to garner support from then-President Donald Trump to halt criminal proceedings against his father. In the process, he has claimed credit for influencing the White House to impose 50 percent tariffs on most Brazilian goods, a move that impacted Brazil’s economy significantly.

This case adds another chapter to the complex legal battles surrounding the Bolsonaro family, raising questions about the intersection of politics, personal agendas, and the rule of law in Brazil.
