Dylan Smith of ‘Love After Lockup’ Sentenced for Mail Theft

Reality TV Star Gets Jail Time, Supervised Release in Chicago

by Sophia Bennett

CHICAGO — Dylan Smith, known for his appearance on Season 3 of the reality television show Love After Lockup, has been sentenced in connection with a mail theft and burglary that occurred in Chicago last summer.

Smith was convicted of felony burglary following a joint investigation by the U.S. Postal Inspection Service and the Chicago Police Department. Authorities say the reality TV star used a U.S. Postal Service master key to access a mail panel inside a local condominium building in May 2024, stealing residents’ mail.

He was arrested on June 4, 2024, and later pleaded guilty in Cook County Criminal Court. Smith received a sentence of 244 days in jail, credited as time already served, and was also ordered to serve two years of supervised release.

Ruth M. Mendonça, Inspector in Charge of the U.S. Postal Inspection Service’s Chicago Division, emphasized the agency’s commitment to protecting the integrity of the mail system. “The U.S. Postal Inspection Service is dedicated to defending the nation’s mail system from criminal activity,” Mendonça said.

While Smith gained public attention for his reality TV appearance, this latest chapter in his life has shifted focus to serious federal crimes. His case underscores the growing concern over the use of stolen USPS keys in mail-related burglaries, a problem that law enforcement agencies nationwide are working to address.

Smith’s sentencing marks the end of a months-long investigation and serves as a reminder that tampering with the nation’s mail system carries serious legal consequences.
