TEMPE, AZ – A man has been arrested in connection with a fatal road rage shooting in Tempe that occurred Tuesday afternoon near a busy intersection.
Tempe police say 46-year-old Dustin Jackson was taken into custody and booked into jail on charges of first-degree murder and drive-by shooting following the death of 29-year-old Steven Bevan.
According to newly released court documents, the incident began near Warner Road and Priest Drive. Jackson was driving a GMC Sierra pickup with his 6-year-old daughter inside, while Bevan was driving a Dodge Challenger with his 9-year-old and 8-year-old sons.
Jackson told officers he honked at Bevan when Bevan didn’t move on a green light. After another light cycle, both vehicles turned and ended up in separate lanes. Jackson claims Bevan then swerved into his lane, brake-checked him, and came to a stop about 400 feet from the intersection.
Witnesses said Bevan exited his vehicle and approached Jackson’s truck with his hands up, appearing to yell. Jackson then allegedly opened his door and shot Bevan once in the chest from approximately five feet away.
Bevan, who was unarmed, was rushed to a hospital but later died from his injuries. No weapons were found in his car.
All three children witnessed the shooting, but none were physically harmed.
Jackson remains in custody as the investigation continues.
