GAINESVILLE, Ga. — A man from Oakwood was arrested on Thursday after allegedly attempting to rob a convenience store in Gainesville with a handgun.

According to a release from the Gainesville Police Department, 29-year-old Douglas Arnell Ward Jr. entered the Texaco on Browns Bridge Road at Pearl Nix Parkway in the early hours of Thursday morning and demanded money from the clerk at gunpoint.

Fortunately, the clerk was protected behind a bullet-resistant barrier and was able to call police immediately, prompting Ward to flee the scene on foot before officers arrived.

Thanks to surveillance footage, investigators were able to identify Ward and later located him on Industrial Boulevard, where he was taken into custody.

As of Friday afternoon, Ward remains in the Hall County Jail without bond, facing multiple charges including armed robbery, aggravated assault, and theft.

The investigation is ongoing.
