The Assam Police team from Digboi chapter successfully cracked a complex burglary case involving gold ornaments worth several lakhs stolen from an unmanned residence near Tingrai Railway Station in Tinsukia district. The investigation, led by SDPO Margherita Co District, resulted in the arrest of five accused, including goldsmith Arun Deb from Madhav Jewellery on Tinsukia AT Road.

The arrested suspects are Tapan Das (39) of Margherita’s Ledu, Hirakjyoti Phukan (25) from Ledu Hamuk village, Rustam Hussain (22) son of Abul Hussain, Pintu Ali (20) from Ledu Hamukjan village, and Arun Deb (55) from Tinsukia. The police recovered nine gold bangles, a pair of earrings, a ring, and about 20 grams of solid gold from melted necklaces and chains.

The daring heist took place at the residence of a 2nd Assam Police Battalion personnel on May 26, 2025, around 11 PM. The victim and family had left for Guwahati on medical grounds a week earlier.

Sub Inspector Pinky Borah praised the teamwork, technical support, and senior officials’ cooperation that helped crack the case within a week. The investigation included securing the crime scene, gathering evidence, and canvassing the area, which provided critical leads to launch the operation.

According to police sources, mastermind Tapan Das and an accomplice had extensively surveilled the target residence during daylight for days before executing the robbery. Realizing the house was unmanned, they hired professional criminals, consumed intoxicants at a roadside dhaba near Makum, and completed the robbery within 30 minutes.

Sensing neighbors’ movement, the robbers fled, abandoning two motorcycles owned by Tapan Das and another absconding accomplice.

The local VDP Committee president lauded the Digboi police for solving a high-profile burglary case so swiftly and recovering the stolen valuables. Inspector Dibya Jyoti Dutta, who led the investigation, has previously earned acclaim for his anti-liquor campaign, earning the nickname ‘Singham’.
