A Florida mother has been charged with first-degree murder in the death of her 4-year-old son, the St. Petersburg Police Department said Wednesday.
Officials reported that the boy’s 16-year-old sister discovered her mother holding the child in bed when she returned home from school around 3:30 p.m. Tuesday. Police said there was blood at the scene and throughout the home.
Diana Elizabeth Cullom, 43, was taken to a hospital for treatment of self-inflicted cuts and has since been released. While police initially believed the child had been stabbed, the medical examiner later determined that he was suffocated.
Authorities said a note believed to have been written by Cullom was found in the house by the 16-year-old, though its contents have not been released. Cullom is currently facing murder charges in connection with her son’s death.
