In a tragic case of alleged domestic violence turned fatal, the Pradhan Nagar Police have arrested Dhiraj Rai on charges of murdering his wife, Deepa Sharma, in Siliguri.
The incident took place on January 3, when Deepa Sharma’s body was found hanging from a noose in her home in the Pabitra Nagar area, Ward No. 46, under the Siliguri Municipal Corporation. Police initially registered the case as a possible suicide and sent the body for post-mortem examination.
However, the case took a significant turn the following day when Durga Sharma, Deepa’s elder sister, lodged a formal complaint at Pradhan Nagar Police Station. Durga accused her brother-in-law, Dhiraj Rai, of being responsible for her sister’s death.
According to Durga Sharma, Deepa had been married to Dhiraj for six years and the couple had a four-year-old son. She alleged that Dhiraj, a native of Sikkim currently residing in Siliguri due to work, was physically and mentally abusive, especially when under the influence of alcohol.
On the night of the incident, Durga claims Dhiraj assaulted Deepa, leading to her death, and then staged the scene to appear as a suicide. Following the complaint and a preliminary investigation, the police arrested Dhiraj Rai, who was subsequently produced in Siliguri Court on Tuesday.
Authorities are continuing their investigation into the case to uncover further details surrounding the circumstances of Deepa Sharma’s death.
