Austin, Texas – Police have arrested 32-year-old Dexter Avery Carrington after he allegedly tried to sell a stolen car from Houston to an Austin dealership using fake documents. He now faces six felony charges, with more expected.
According to the Austin Police Department (APD), officers were alerted on September 8 by a security manager from a major rental car company who had tracked a stolen 2025 Nissan Altima to an Austin car lot. The vehicle had been taken from a secured location in Houston.
Investigators say Carrington sold the Altima to the dealership for $17,000, using a forged Florida vehicle title. After the rental company notified the dealership of the fraud, the transaction was canceled, and the vehicle was secured.
When Carrington returned to the dealership later, officers detained him. During questioning, he claimed he had purchased the car and sold it to support his family, but inconsistencies in his story and forged paperwork confirmed the deception.
Carrington is currently facing three felony charges in Travis County:
Fraudulent securing of document execution ($2,500–$30,000)
False statement to obtain property or credit ($2,500–$30,000)
Theft of property ($2,500–$30,000)
Police say he is also under investigation in Houston for similar crimes and could face additional charges.
Authorities believe Carrington is tied to around 20 auto theft cases, including four investigated by Houston Police (HPD). His operation allegedly involved using a female accomplice to rent vehicles, make duplicate keys, attach tracking devices, and steal the cars after they were returned. He would then forge Florida titles based on counterfeit Texas documents before reselling the vehicles.
The investigation remains ongoing.
