DEVINE, Texas — Greg Atkinson, the Fire Chief of Devine Fire & Rescue, was arrested Thursday morning and booked into the Medina County Jail on allegations of official oppression and sexual harassment.

Atkinson, who has been with the department for over two years, turned himself in after an investigation was initiated following a complaint from a former female employee of the fire department on February 13.

Medina County Sheriff Randy Brown confirmed that the investigation found some of the allegations to be true. “He used his position to try to obtain favors,” Brown explained. Physical evidence, including lewd photographs, was obtained during the investigation.

Sheriff Brown expressed regret over the situation, stating, “We definitely find no pleasure in this. It’s very sad. I know the fire chief, and I wish this wasn’t something we were having to do.”

The investigation is ongoing, and Sheriff Brown is encouraging current or former employees of Devine Fire & Rescue, or anyone who believes they have been wronged, to come forward.

Following Atkinson’s arrest, the Devine Volunteer Fire and Rescue Department issued a statement confirming Atkinson’s suspension. Assistant Chief Jessica Massey Martinez will serve as Interim Chief during the ongoing investigation, ensuring the department’s leadership and operations continue without disruption. The department assured that the Fire & EMS Academy program would not be affected by the investigation.
