WETUMPKA, Ala. – Two 18-year-old men are in custody following a robbery and shooting that occurred early Monday morning in Wetumpka.
According to court records obtained by Action 8 News, officers responded around 2:30 a.m. to the 700 block of Government Street, where they discovered an adult male with a gunshot wound. The victim reported being robbed and then shot by two or three males.
The victim told officers that the actual incident occurred a few blocks away, and his vehicle was located in that area. Police later determined the shooting took place in the 50 block of North Street.
While securing the scene, police were alerted to a second gunshot victim at Elmore Community Hospital. There, they found Deshaun Benson, 18, of Wetumpka. However, further investigation revealed he was not a victim but a suspect in the robbery and shooting. Benson was arrested and charged with first-degree robbery and first-degree assault.
Officers also arrested A’Marious Johnson, 18, also of Wetumpka. Though his specific role in the crime wasn’t detailed in court records, Johnson faces the same first-degree robbery charge.
Court documents state that Benson and Johnson arranged to meet the victim through Snapchat, intending to rob him at gunpoint and steal his narcotics.
Both suspects are currently held at the Elmore County Jail as the investigation continues.
