GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. — Gwinnett County police have identified the victim and charged a suspect in a deadly shooting that occurred early Jan. 11 in unincorporated Snellville.
Authorities confirmed that Abel Alejandro Unzicker Chavez, 36, of Snellville, was killed in the incident. Police say Derrick Devon Thomas, 30, also of Snellville, has been charged with felony murder, aggravated assault, possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
Officers from the South Precinct responded around 3:10 a.m. to a “person down” call in the 3800 block of Saddle Ridge Drive. Upon arrival, they found an adult male deceased from an apparent gunshot wound. Homicide detectives and the Crime Scene Unit processed the scene and interviewed witnesses.
FOX 5 obtained security footage from a neighbor’s home showing gunshots followed by a vehicle fleeing the scene.
Investigators say the shooting appears to be isolated, with no immediate threat to the public. Police are continuing to investigate the events leading up to the incident and are asking anyone with information to contact Gwinnett County Police or Crime Stoppers.
