A Backus, Minnesota man, Derrick Norman Kading, has been arrested following a shooting incident in the early hours of February 14, 2025. Kading, 36, faces charges including second-degree assault with a dangerous weapon, possession of a firearm, and failing to render aid to the victim.
At approximately 12:00 a.m., authorities from the Cass County Sheriff’s Office responded to reports of a man who had been shot in the stomach. The victim was air-lifted to a nearby hospital for treatment. During the investigation, Kading admitted to shooting the victim in the stomach with a .45 caliber pistol, but failed to call for help afterward.
Further examination revealed that Kading hid the firearm in his truck following the shooting. Law enforcement recovered the weapon, which was unloaded and locked in a storage compartment along with ammunition and a leather shoulder holster. Additionally, blood traces were found on the pistol and its magazine, suggesting a clear link to the shooting.
Kading, who was initially taken to the hospital for treatment, is now in custody at the Itasca County Jail. His arrest comes as authorities continue to process the charges against him.
