KANAWHA COUNTY, W.Va. (WCHS) — A Kanawha County Sheriff’s deputy is facing serious charges following allegations of sexually assaulting a female inmate inside the judicial annex.

Authorities say Cass Close, 54, of Quick, was arrested and charged with imposition of sexual acts on persons incarcerated, detained, or under supervision. Close served as a bailiff in circuit court at the Kanawha County Judicial Annex.

The alleged incident took place on Tuesday, while the inmate was at the annex for a court hearing. According to court records, the woman reported that Close made inappropriate sexual comments while she waited in a holding cell.

She told investigators that Close removed her from the cell multiple times and took her into his adjoining office, where the alleged sexual assaults occurred. He is also accused of taking photos of her genitals.

Close was arrested at his home Thursday morning and arraigned later that afternoon. His bond was set at $100,000.

Sheriff Joe Crawford said during a press conference that the matter is being criminally investigated by West Virginia State Police, while his office will conduct a parallel internal investigation.

“I want the public to know this behavior is sickening and a disgrace,” Crawford said. “My office has zero tolerance for misconduct. We are held to a higher standard, and no badge or position justifies abuse.”

He also extended sympathy to the victim, promising full cooperation with the investigation and a commitment to justice.
