Baton Rouge Woman Arrested After DWI Crash Injures 7-Year-Old Son

BATON ROUGE, La. — A 37-year-old Baton Rouge woman, Dellkeda Orange, was arrested after a late-night crash on Industriplex Boulevard left her 7-year-old son seriously injured and damaged three vehicles.

The East Baton Rouge Sheriff’s Office (EBRSO) responded to the scene around 9:35 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 5. Deputies determined that Orange, who was driving a Ford Escape, lost control of the vehicle after reportedly hitting a curb.

Arrest records state the child was not wearing a seatbelt at the time. He was rushed to a hospital with injuries including lacerations to his liver.

Officers at the scene noted a strong odor of alcohol on Orange’s breath, and her speech was slurred. During questioning, Orange admitted to drinking “too much Fireball Whiskey” at home and decided to drive a short distance to drop off her son.

According to the affidavit, she told deputies everything was fine “until she hit the curb and lost control of the vehicle.”

Orange was transported to the hospital for medical clearance, where a blood sample was collected for analysis.

She was booked into the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison the following day, Saturday, Sept. 6, and charged with the following offenses:

Reckless operation of a vehicle

First-offense driving while intoxicated (DWI)

First-degree vehicular negligent injuring

Child restraint violation

No insurance

The investigation remains ongoing.
