Delhi Police on Tuesday busted a gang in the national capital and arrested eight robbers who impersonated police officers to carry out a robbery in Laxmi Nagar.
The accused were caught with laptops, mobile phones, vehicles, and the stolen cash. They had posed as personnel from the Delhi Police’s Special Staff Unit and raided an insurance policy office.
The crime came to light after a complaint by Salman, whose office was targeted. CCTV footage and surveillance helped police identify the suspects.
Four of the accused posing as Special Staff officers entered Salman’s office, stealing his mobile phone and laptop. They then forcibly took him away in a Hyundai Venue, physically assaulted him, and extorted Rs 1.5 lakh, including Rs 70,000 transferred to an account, under threats of implicating him in a fake insurance fraud case.
Acting on technical leads, police arrested five absconding accused on Noida Link Road, travelling in the stolen vehicle. Three more were later arrested in a joint operation by the Special Staff/East District and Laxmi Nagar police stations.
Interrogation revealed that Hunny Kumar, a former employee of Salman, provided insider information to key accused Sunny Sharma, who orchestrated the robbery. Sunny Sharma had previously been arrested for a cyber fraud case in Ghaziabad.
Hunny Kumar admitted to a personal grudge against his former employer and conspired with others to carry out the crime. The gang impersonated police officers to intimidate the victim and extort money by threatening false implications.
The East District Police has urged the public to verify identities of individuals claiming to be police officers to avoid falling victim to such scams.
