The Delhi Police Metro Unit has successfully busted a gang responsible for a series of metro cable thefts that took place over four days. The police arrested three gang members and recovered approximately 85 meters of stolen cable.
The gang had stolen nearly 1,000 meters of metro cable, which they sold to scrap dealers at a rate of Rs 700 per meter. The gang’s ability to scale structures with ropes and trees earned them the nickname “Spider-Man” from their associates. Their method of operation included scouting locations, executing thefts between midnight and 4 am, and selling the stolen cables in Seelampur and Ghaziabad.
According to Vijay Singh, Joint Commissioner of the Metro Unit, the police were first alerted to the thefts on February 2, when cables were stolen near Azadpur Metro station. The gang continued their spree the following days, targeting cables at Majlis Park and Janakpuri. A prior theft had occurred on December 12.
In response, the Delhi Police formed a special investigation team and reviewed footage from over 100 CCTV cameras in the affected areas. Their analysis revealed the thieves’ escape routes, which consistently led towards Najafgarh.
Using technical surveillance, the police made their first arrest of Govind, alias “Spider-Man.” During questioning, the police apprehended two more suspects—Sushil, a Bolero driver, and Aas Mohammad.
Efforts to capture three additional gang members who remain at large are ongoing. The police are continuing their investigation into the network responsible for these metro cable thefts.
