Delhi Police Crime Branch has arrested two drug traffickers involved in sourcing cannabis from Odisha and Bihar for sale in Delhi, seizing 27.568 kg of contraband, officials said on Sunday.
The accused, Birender Pratap Singh (46) and Jayaram Das (54), both residents of Samaypur Badli in northwest Delhi, operated a bulk ganja supply network in the capital. Jayaram Das, a resident of Vaishali, Bihar, was responsible for transporting the narcotics from Odisha to Delhi.
The traffickers’ modus operandi involved travelling by train to Odisha to acquire cannabis and returning to Delhi by bus. They frequently changed buses and destroyed tickets after each journey to evade detection, police said.
Jayaram Das, a school dropout, turned to drug trafficking for easy money after Birender Pratap Singh recruited him on a commission basis. Originally from Samastipur, Bihar, Birender relocated to Delhi in search of livelihood and got involved in illegal activities. He had prior cases registered under the Arms Act and Excise Act and served jail time before resuming narcotics supply.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime Branch) Aditya Gautam said the operation was based on a tip-off from Assistant Sub-Inspector Kuldeep Maan. A special team led by Inspector Satish Malik and under the supervision of Assistant Commissioner of Police Naresh Solanki conducted a raid, recovering over 27 kg of cannabis from Birender.
A case was registered under Sections 20 and 25 of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985.
