The Delhi Police apprehended Nikhil on Wednesday, the prime suspect in the shocking double murder of a woman and a six-month-old infant in the Majnu Ka Tila area of Delhi.
Nikhil was captured in his hometown of Haldwani, Uttarakhand, just a day after the heinous crime occurred. Authorities revealed that Nikhil was in a live-in relationship with the victim, Sonal. Following the murders, he attempted suicide but failed and fled to Uttarakhand to avoid arrest.
The police are arranging his transfer back to Delhi for further interrogation.
The tragic incident came to light Tuesday when the bodies of Sonal and the infant — the daughter of Sonal’s friend Rashmi — were discovered at a residence in Majnu Ka Tila. The horrifying crime shook the city and mobilized multiple law enforcement units.
Preliminary investigations indicate that Sonal had recently moved in with Rashmi after separating from Nikhil amid ongoing disputes. On the day of the attack, Rashmi had briefly stepped out, leaving Sonal and the infant alone. Police suspect Nikhil exploited this opportunity to enter the home and fatally stab both victims.
Civil Lines Police, forensic teams, and the Crime Branch quickly launched an intensive investigation. The accused is currently being questioned as the inquiry progresses.
This case follows another brutal double murder reported just four days earlier in Lajpat Nagar-I, where Mukesh Paswan, a helper, killed Ruchika Sewani and her 14-year-old son Krish in a revenge attack. Paswan was arrested in Uttar Pradesh while attempting to flee to Bihar and has confessed to the crime.
