by Ananya Mehta

In a significant anti-narcotics operation near Delhi University’s North Campus, the Delhi Police have arrested five individuals involved in the illegal supply of pharmaceutical drugs without valid bills or prescriptions. The accused include a medicine shop owner, a medical representative, and three others.

Deputy Commissioner of Police, Anti-Narcotics Task Force (Crime), Apoorva Gupta, confirmed that a total of 2,360 capsules of Tramadol, 135 bottles of codeine-based cough syrup, and five mobile phones were seized during the operation.

The accused were identified as Manish Bhatle (26), Devender (57), Nikhil alias Gunnu (28), Ankit Gupta (40), and Kapil (28).

According to the FIR filed on May 12, the racket was uncovered when police arrested Manish Bhatle near University Road, close to Shri Ram Institute. At the time of his arrest, Manish was carrying two plastic sacks — one containing 2,360 capsules (including Dicyclomine HCl, Tramadol HCl, and Acetaminophen) and the other 120 bottles of 100 ml codeine-based syrup. Manish could not produce any bills or prescriptions for the drugs.

The police, accompanied by Drug Inspector Dr. Swapnil Patil, confirmed that possession of pharmaceutical drugs without bills or prescriptions is illegal under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.

Following Manish’s arrest, police questioned and arrested Devender, the medical store owner, and Nikhil. Their interrogation led authorities to Ankit Gupta, owner of the wholesale medicine shop Ravi Medicare. The last to be arrested was Kapil, a medical representative, who disclosed that the drugs were supplied to him by a certain Rakesh, currently absconding.

The entire operation was conducted under the close supervision of Special Commissioner of Police Devesh Chandra Srivastva, Joint CP Surender Singh, and Additional Commissioner of Police Mangesh Kashyap.
