In a crackdown on illegal drug sales, the Shivajinagar police in Pune arrested two men, Deepak Wadekar and Sajan Jadhav, for allegedly distributing Mephentermine Sulphate injections, a drug commonly misused by young bodybuilders for performance enhancement. The duo was apprehended after the police seized 14 injection vials and a car during their investigation.

Mephentermine Sulphate, a cardiac stimulant originally used to treat low blood pressure, has gained popularity in fitness circles due to its perceived benefits in boosting endurance and muscle gains. However, its misuse can lead to severe health problems, including high blood pressure, skin rashes, and breathing difficulties. The accused, who claimed they were using the injections for bodybuilding, did not provide any prescription or legal documents for the drugs, raising suspicion about the legality of their possession.

The illegal trade of such performance-enhancing drugs often operates within gyms, medical stores, and other fitness-related establishments, with prices ranging from Rs500 to Rs5,000 per vial—significantly higher than its original price of ₹220. Authorities are currently investigating the scope of the illicit market and its connections within the fitness community.

The police have charged Wadekar and Jadhav under Sections 278, 125, and 3 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, and further inquiries are underway to identify other individuals involved in this underground drug trade.
