A long-time domestic help was arrested on Sunday night for allegedly stealing valuables worth over Rs1 crore from a prominent businessman’s residence in Ballygunge.

The accused, Deepak Mondal, had been working at the Rowland Row home of 73-year-old Nathmal Bangani for the past ten years. Using his knowledge of the house’s layout and access points, Mondal allegedly made off with a large haul that included gold and diamond-studded jewellery, a Rolex wristwatch, two other high-end watches, silver items, and Rs12,000 in cash.

He was apprehended at Sealdah railway station while trying to escape to Madhubani in Bihar. During the arrest, Kolkata Police recovered several stolen items from his possession, including a gold chain.

Investigators believe that Mondal’s decade-long employment helped him understand the location of the keys and valuables, making the theft premeditated. A formal complaint was lodged by Bangani at Ballygunge Police Station, which led to a swift manhunt and arrest.
