The detection staff of Khar police station arrested Deepak Khavle, a 30-year-old man, for his involvement in a high-profile theft valued at Rs50 lakh. The stolen items included luxury watches such as Bvlgari, Vacheron Constantin, and a reportedly priceless gift from industrialist Mukesh Ambani.

The incident occurred on the night of December 31, 2024, at a triplex apartment on Carter Road, Bandra West, belonging to a 67-year-old complainant, the country head of British Petroleum. Khavle executed the burglary by scaling a ten-floor-high building using bamboo scaffolding—which was originally set up for painting work—and entered the apartment through a window. The victim’s apartment spanned three floors, with the eleventh floor serving as his office.

Khavle, a repeat offender with prior house break-in and assault charges, was tracked down due to his distinctive limp—a result of an injury sustained when he fell from the fourth floor during a previous escape attempt. This injury had led to metal rods being inserted into his legs, making his limp a recognizable trait.

The police faced initial difficulties identifying Khavle as he wore gloves, a mask, a hoodie, and a cap, leaving no fingerprints. However, the breakthrough in the case came from technology. A GPS tracker attached to one of the stolen bags, along with AirPods that connected to his phone, ultimately pinpointed his location and led to his arrest on January 3.

Khavle’s arrest brings closure to a complex and high-profile theft case, shedding light on the use of modern technology to track criminals despite their efforts to evade detection.
