A man known for his persistent shoplifting has been sentenced to three and a half years in prison following a series of thefts in Coventry city centre. David Cowan, 34, was arrested on Palmer Lane after breaching a Criminal Behaviour Order (CBO) that had been imposed on him earlier this year, which specifically banned him from entering the area.

Cowan was found guilty of committing three separate shop thefts, as well as four violations of the CBO. His continued disregard for the court order led to his sentence at Coventry Magistrates’ Court on November 8, 2024.

Sgt. Adam Lewis, from the St. Michael’s neighbourhood team, praised the outcome, noting that Cowan’s lengthy sentence was the result of ongoing efforts to tackle prolific offenders in the city. “This is a significant result. Cowan repeatedly violated the terms of his CBO and continued his spree of criminal activity. Now, he has paid the price for his actions,” Lewis said.

The case highlights a broader initiative in Coventry to crack down on repeat offenders. In the past 12 months, the use of CBOs has proven to be an effective tool for preventing further crimes by known offenders. These orders allow authorities to take proactive measures before crimes are committed, reducing harm to local businesses and communities.

Police, in collaboration with Coventry Business Improvement District (BID) and Coventry City Council, are continuing their work to target shoplifting and anti-social behavior (ASB) in the area. “We know how disruptive shoplifting can be for local businesses, and we will continue to take action against those who cause harm,” added Sgt. Lewis.

Cowan’s sentencing is seen as another win in the ongoing efforts to maintain public safety and support businesses in Coventry.
