Three individuals, David Bishop, Andrea Caffro, and Robert Trujillo, were arrested in Sugar Land early Tuesday morning after a routine traffic stop turned into a major felony investigation. Police observed a suspicious vehicle in a neighborhood around 4 a.m., which had an expired registration.
Upon investigating the vehicle, officers discovered multiple homemade community mailbox keys and a bag filled with mail belonging to over 50 individuals. Sugar Land Police Capt. David White commented that the bag was openly visible in the back of the truck.
The trio was arrested and charged with theft of mail, a felony. Additionally, Bishop and Trujillo were charged with unlawful use of a criminal instrument. The suspects have previous criminal records, with one of them currently on felony probation for a previous mail theft charge.
None of the recovered mail was from Sugar Land, and authorities suspect the thieves are involved in mail thefts across several jurisdictions in Fort Bend County. Investigators are working to identify victims from different ZIP codes and believe the suspects are also connected to other thefts, including one that occurred recently in Mission Bend.
