David Andrew Williams Arrested in ID Theft Scheme

Chicago man charged in Metro Detroit identity fraud case

by Amelia Crawford

David Andrew Williams, a 30-year-old man from Chicago, has been arrested in Troy, Michigan, for his alleged role in a large-scale identity theft operation targeting Metro Detroit residents.

The investigation began after a UPS driver reported suspicious activity — a man was seen trying to intercept a package not addressed to him. Troy police responded and ensured the package was delivered directly to its rightful recipient. Officers then observed the same man attempting to retrieve the package from the porch, confirming their suspicions.

It turned out the package contained a replacement debit card, requested by the victim after her original card was compromised. Authorities discovered this was part of a broader scheme where victims received spoofed text messages falsely claiming their debit cards had been compromised. New cards were mailed, then intercepted and used to withdraw funds directly from the victims’ accounts.

Several victims across Metro Detroit reported similar experiences. Investigators, using search warrants and digital forensics, linked Williams to the crimes. He was arrested and formally charged on September 21 with identity theft, unlawful possession of a financial transaction device, and driving without a license.

Williams is being held on a $75,000 bond. According to police, he has a lengthy criminal record involving identity theft and credit card fraud, and he is currently on probation for similar crimes.

Officials believe this case is part of a larger organized fraud operation.
